Here’s a new custom portrait that I’ve just completed for Elle and her son, Aston!
I thought I’d show you a bit of my creative process. This is a rough outline that I sketched and sent to Elle. It’s quite basic and it gives my customers an idea of the layout and setting. I remind my customers that the finished artwork is usually more detailed and colourful. Sometimes I get nervous wondering if they are going to comment about the lack of details or the fact that I haven’t drawn their eyeballs yet! But to my relief, my customers are usually very enthused about the whole process and I’m always amazed at how much faith they have in me! Oh the pressure!
Now to the colouring part, which you all know is my favourite! It’s where I add in extra details which makes it fun and creative, and also very tedious. Colouring the flower prints on Elle’s dress made me see coloured spots even after I walked away from the computer!
I think what makes a good custom portrait are the little details that I add into the picture to make it uniquely theirs. Like that little cowlick on their hair, a favourite dress or anything that makes them squeal “Oh this is soooo us!” To me, that is the BEST surprise I can give to my customers
